Ron Zacapa Edicion Negra Solera Gran Reserva. Ron Zacapa, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala — the dark, intense sister expression to Zacapa 23, aging rums between 6 and 23 years in a multi-cask system that includes American whiskey casks, sherry casks, and Pedro Ximenez wine casks for a smoky, complex, chocolate and dried fruit profile at 43% ABV — the most dramatically wood-influenced expression in the Zacapa lineup.
Ron Zacapa Edicion Negra takes the same base — virgin sugar cane honey, Sistema Solera aging in the Guatemalan highlands at 2,300 meters elevation, Master Rum Maker Lorena Vasquez overseeing the blending at the Fraijanes plateau — and adds a dramatically different cask program. Where Zacapa 23 uses primarily American white oak ex-bourbon casks, the Edicion Negra passes through three different cask types: American whiskey barrels contribute vanilla, caramel, and spice; sherry casks add dried fruit, raisin, and the nutty oxidative character; Pedro Ximenez wine casks add concentrated sweetness, dark chocolate, and a molasses-like richness that gives the Negra its characteristic dark, smoky profile.
The result is a Zacapa expression designed for those who want the Guatemala highlands foundation with significantly more wood influence and cask complexity than the 23 delivers. The 43% ABV (versus 40% for Zacapa 23) adds additional presence and structure. The Edicion Negra is a serious sipping rum for the collector who has graduated from Zacapa 23 and wants more.
