Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 2006 — a 13-year Kentucky straight rye whiskey from the Van Winkle family program, now nearly two decades from its original release. One of the rarest expressions in the Pappy Van Winkle lineup, produced in far smaller quantities than the wheated bourbon expressions that define the brand.

The Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye is produced from a high-rye mashbill rather than the wheated mashbill that defines Old Rip Van Winkle and the Pappy Van Winkle 15, 20, and 23 Year bourbons. Where the wheated expressions are celebrated for their butterscotch-forward softness, the Family Reserve Rye presents a fundamentally different grain character — spice, dried fruit, and oak at rye-dominant intensity. At 13 years, the rye grain's natural assertiveness has been moderated but not lost, integrating with barrel character that two decades of bottle age has further developed.

The 2006 vintage is now among the oldest Pappy Van Winkle Rye releases available through specialty retail — a document of the program at a specific moment nearly two decades ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does the Van Winkle Rye differ from the Pappy bourbons? The Pappy Van Winkle bourbons (15, 20, 23 Year) use a wheated mashbill — wheat as the secondary grain — producing the soft, butterscotch-forward character the brand is famous for. The Family Reserve Rye uses rye as the dominant secondary grain, producing a fundamentally spicier, more assertive grain character. The two programs share the Van Winkle name and production philosophy but deliver completely different flavor profiles.
