The same award-winning Hibiki 17 Year liquid — multi-cask blended Japanese whisky from Suntory's Yamazaki, Hakushu, and Chita distilleries — in a rare limited edition 700ml bottle adorned with chrysanthemum and crane designs.

Hibiki 17 Year was one of Suntory's most celebrated ongoing expressions before its discontinuation in 2018. A blend of aged malt whiskies from Yamazaki and Hakushu combined with Chita grain whisky, matured in American oak, Spanish oak, and Mizunara Japanese oak, it won multiple World Whisky of the Year and Best Blended Whisky designations across its production run.

The Chrysanthemum & Crane Limited Edition presents this liquid in a distinctive 700ml bottle decorated with chrysanthemum flowers and crane motifs — two of Japan's most powerful symbolic images. The chrysanthemum is Japan's imperial flower, associated with longevity and rejuvenation. The crane is a symbol of good fortune, longevity, and fidelity in Japanese culture. Together they make this one of the most visually distinctive Hibiki presentations. Since Hibiki 17 Year was discontinued in 2018, all remaining stock — including limited edition presentations — is finite and irreplaceable.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Warm amber with golden tones.
  • Nose: Honey, dried fruit, and a gentle smoke — the multi-cask complexity developing with time in the glass.
  • Palate: Smooth and well-balanced — dark chocolate, caramel, and a touch of spice from the Mizunara oak's subtle influence.
  • Finish: Long and elegant with a lingering sweetness and subtle smokiness.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Hibiki 17 Year still being produced? No — Suntory discontinued the Hibiki 17 Year in 2018 due to aged whisky supply constraints. All remaining stock worldwide is finite. The discontinuation makes every remaining bottle — especially limited edition presentations like this one — increasingly collectible.
  • What is the significance of the chrysanthemum and crane symbolism? The chrysanthemum is Japan's imperial flower, used on the imperial seal and associated with longevity and rejuvenation. The crane is a symbol of good fortune and fidelity — Japanese legend holds that a person who folds 1,000 origami cranes will be granted a wish. Together these symbols represent two of the most powerful motifs in Japanese cultural tradition.
  • Is the liquid different from the standard Hibiki 17 Year? No — the whisky inside is the same Hibiki 17 Year multi-cask blend. The distinction is entirely the limited edition bottle design and the 700ml format (standard Hibiki was also available in 750ml for the U.S. market).
  • Is this a good collector's bottle? Yes — the combination of the discontinued Hibiki 17 Year liquid and the rare limited edition presentation makes this a compelling piece for Japanese whisky collectors.
